PENNY
One day in May 2009 the dog warden came in with a dog which was one of the saddest sights we have seen; a beautiful black and white Springer Spaniel (called Penny) who had spent nearly all her life in a crate.
It looked to us like she hadn’t even been allowed out of her crate to go to the toilet.
She was covered in urine and excrement and it took 3 baths for her to even start looking clean.
Even her ears were filthy.
She couldn’t stand properly as she didn’t have any muscle on her back legs as she hadn’t had any exercise.
Slowly but surely she started to improve. We all fell in love with her instantly; we fed her by hand, gradually took her for walks and gave her lots and lots of kisses!
By chance (or fate!) a lady (Mrs W) came in to the kennels looking for a rescue dog to adopt and particularly liked Springer Spaniels.
Although Penny was not quite ready to leave us the lady came back again and again to see her and gradually Penny was ready to leave us and go and live with Mrs W.
Well, although Penny had been checked over by our vet, it turned out she was pregnant!
When she first came in her pregnancy was so early there was no way of knowing. Mrs W was wonderful she said she didn’t mind she loved her and she would ensure she had all the care needed.
A few weeks later she looked like she was coming into labour so she came back to our maternity ward (Chris and Jerry’s front room!) and gave birth to four beautiful healthy puppies.
Mrs W took them all home with her and Penny turned out to be a fantastic mother.
We were told that sometimes when all the puppies were asleep Penny would creep into the living room and jump on either Mr or Mrs W’s lap for a cuddle but as soon as a puppy ‘squeaked’ she would be straight back there with them!
We are now pleased to report that all four puppies were re-homed and Penny has now been spayed and is doing remarkably well.
She pops in to see us sometimes with her new Mum and she looks the picture of health.
So a very big THANK YOU to Mr and Mrs W for giving Penny a life she could have only dreamed about!
Thanks xx
PENNY (Dec 2010)
Hi Christine,
Thank you so much for the Christmas card - Penny was so surprised!
I have attached a photo of Penny posing on the park - taken today. She loves the snow and charges around like a mad dog eating as much as she can and flicking it in the air.
She stayed with you in the summer when we went away for a few days but I think you were on holiday.
She is a pleasure to have and I still marvel at the fact that she wasn't cared for and loved as she doesn't do a thing wrong. She is so obedient and does everything you tell her.
She lives the life of luxury and I suppose is somewhat spoiled but that's just me.
She had some more dental treatment done recently and had to have 3 teeth out. She looks odd as 2 were at the top front and when she 'smiles' she looks really comical. We just have to be careful what she eats as many of them are fractured and easily broken; touch wood she will be ok for a while as it's not nice being put to sleep is it (and rather costly!).
Everyone loves her when we go doggie walking and she knows who she likes and who she doesn't. It is people she loves and if someone is lying on the grass they get a cuddle whether they want one of they don't! I have had dogs all my life and have never met a dog that cuddles you - it's so cute.
Well I hope you all have a great Christmas and New Year and when we plan our next break I am sure Penny will see you soon.
Lesley and Penny.

D.J.
D.J. was off to the vets to be put to sleep but one of our staff got to hear about it and went and took him off the owners. D.J. was only 18 months old but had spent his entire life in a small house with 4 children under 4.
He had never been on a lead or been out of the house apart from to the back yard for a wee! When he came into us he was very badly knotted and his little paws the first week were sore where he was going out to play.
We didn’t know how he would be around children after suffering being pulled around so he came home for a couple of weeks. He fell in love with our youngest Gerard and the Brio train track!
Through a contact in export we came across a family who were looking for a family dog and on 28 December he hitched a ride with Jerry up to London to his new home.
Just thought I would give you an update on we are getting on.
I believe Digger has settled in very quickly and all the family have fallen in love with him (let alone friends and extended family)”.

DAISY

Daisy came into us at only 6 months old and had not seen much or done much and in boredom was systematically chewing all the woodwork in the flat where she was living!
She was frightened of everything initially and has hip dysplasia.
The weekend she came we were fully booked in the kennels so she snook home before Jerry returned home!
That is where she has been ever since!
She is the most adorable dog and inseparable from her play buddy Gerard.
When you come in you may catch sight of her in the office or outside with Gerard playing pretend cafes!

Sarah, Sophie and Splodges Adventures October 2010
Sadly our mums owners moved house and decided to leave her behind to fend for herself. Mum must have spent a lot of time outside scrounging for food and fell pregnant with us. The new owner of the flat, Liza moved in and started to feed our mum as she was worried how thin she was. As she was so kind mum moved in with Liza and within a few days gave birth to us which was a big surprise as mum was so thin! Liza cared for our mum through the night to help her ensure she had the energy to feed us. This is a picture of us at 8 weeks old. Given all the cuddles and love we have had we are very social, loving kittens and have gone to fabulous new homes but will never ever forget Liza who took mum in and enabled mum and us to survive. We love you Liza very very much.
